Popping/Spitting Noise

Post by Joda »

The van appears to have developed a popping/spitting noise only does it when holding Accelerator pedal about a ¼ to ½ (ish) way down - nothing present at tick over. Any ideas what it might be?

Could possible causes be Carb. related? (stock twin solex)

The van is a 2ltr 1982 Aircooled

Thanks in advance for any ideas/suggestions on possible cause.

PS Appologies if the above is a bit vague but no other way to describe it.

hi m8
i'd check all the little vacuum hoses for splits at the ends as they tend to cause all sorts of problems.

Thanks for the reply.

I have replaced 2 today - Servo T piece on Balance bar Between Carbs & Elbow on inlet Manifold.

Guess tomorrows job is to check all other pipes/rubber tubes in engine bay.

When mine did this, it was some crap in the carbs,i would have thought that the problem is most likely to be this.

All other pipes/hoses checked, can't find any splits.

Took van out for a drive this afternoon, noise still only appears when you put your foot down, and is not there through out the rev range.

Will clean carbs as suggested. Steady little job for tomorrow then.

T3LEE - When yours did this, did it also happen when van was ticking over?

No just when driving, from 3rd gear onwards while giving it some revs.
Used to pop and splutter with slight loss of power,i didnt do it my mechanic did,he just took carbs out and give them a good clean, one was full of crap.
I have 2 filters from the tank to the engine now,to make sure that to much crap cant get through.
