it isnt. its just excess metal that gets in the way, but i dont think vw could leave it out. "it was in our aircoolers so it`ll be in our diesels" type of thinking. must be an engine in the rear thing????

Is this the undertray sound-proofing or the side shields?

Scrape it off with an electricians bolster straight into a PVC sheet/bag or wheelie bin, or use soemthing slightly more flexible and sharp (an (old!) steel spatula is great to finish off :) )

If want can then re-line with something fire-resistant and sound absorbent - e.g. compacted glass fibre matt. If not worried about diesel fires (a bit late in the day by time that gets going, then anything sound abosrbent and dense enough, like a vinyl covered fibre sheet, bonded. All depends how much you want to spend, what's lying a round and how much rattle and knocking you want to suppress.

Back the van over a kerb, two things, if you have the tray it will slide over on that. If you take it of possible to hit the ally sump. I leave mine on to collect the oil to stop it hitting other cars and going up the back of my van. Keeps the sound down, stops water, mud, sticks, stones etc all away from the engine .

Just my thoughts

I think only a pair of ear mufflers will make much difference to the noise.
My tinwear has been removed from day one, only half of it was there in the first place and I wolud rather know I have a leak as soon as it leaks rather than when it overflows out of the bottom..

I imagine it's to prevent radiative heat from cooking the turbo's inlet side, much the same as the manifold heat shields; and keep a wee bit more heat in the exhaust gases post turbo.
