Fitting a CB Radio?

Post by Beach Bum »

Just got me sen a CB off bigbluebus. Ok, i have a bank of spare fuses that my auto electrician fitted for me when doing some other work. Would one of these fuses be enough or do I need to fit an inline one to the positive wire. What fuse sizes do I use.

Also there are 2 wires coming of the cb one red (i presume positive), and one red/black, would this one connect to the opposite side of the possy wire in the fuse block.

hope this makes sense to someone.

Red wire to positive...

If your autoelectrician has provided you with some fuses, then you won't need an extra inline fuse.

(Although you should check the ratings! You need a fuse around 10A max, so if you've got a 30A whopper in there you might want to change it!)

The black wire is negative. It needs to go to the vehicle body. Have a look on the bodywork on the nearside behind the fusebox. There should be an 'earth' block with lots of spade connectors on it. Hopefully one or two spare you can connect to there....

just another quick tip m8. when you wire it in,, DO NOT be tempted to try the microphone push to talk until you have an aerial plugged in or you will damage the radio. the transmitter needs to see something around a 50ohm load which is what the aerial presents to it and without one connected the transmit power amplifier will fry in seconds. because its an old cb it may then be un-economical to repair
hope this isn't too techy but you know wot us radio hams are like
just mount the aerial and screw the plug into the set before using the microphone and you'll be fine.
if when its installed and you do transmit only a couple of the led's light then the swr is probs a bit out, if they all light it's probably fine. (this is because the radio will see slightly hi swr and reduce the output accordingly.)
cheers

watts divided by volts equals amps. stick that rate fuse inline.
