Yep!

Been tested by the Army too. As with any rust you don't want loose bits but I've used countless so-called rust treaments and none of them were any good. That stuff is the creme de la creme.

Yeah - really good stuff. Did my bits of rust with vactan around August last year and no sign of it coming back even without painting.

Anyway this weekend I'm about to put the rollers to my van for the first time. Even the test piece I did with a brush was pretty impressive with the combicolor paint although to be honest that was without thinners which you need for the roller method.

Seems to go touch dry reasonably quickly but I shall be on the lookout for knats and other wee beasties!

By the way, a bottle of vactan goes a LONG way but DO wear gloves as your fingers will go black after a few minutes and it has a consistency like dried evo-stick once it dries on fingers - takes some shifting.

P.S. Forgot to mention on the roller front. B&Q do the small high-density foam rollers but my local £1 shop does a similar mini-roller and tray. The high-density rollers fit the roller handles that come with these cheap roller trays perfectly so I bought 8! Last thing I want to be doing is washing a roller tray afterwards.....

You can do the final coat by spray - quite a few do that. The biggest plus in this paint's favour is its toughness and the fact its stops rust. Clearly you need to treat any existing bad rust and the vactan put a halt to all the rust areas on mine.

Preparation however is always important so I figure an early Saturday morning start will be best bet and then start getting the paint on around mid-day.

I picked the RAL 5002 (blue) if you can see that on the chart.

Incidently, I'm informed that the chap at Lawsons is very helpful on info regarding application of this paint and it sprays well too.

I will post pictures up if that helps anyone.

Top thread this CovKid, am now convinced this is the way forward for me too. When I was a youngster we used to brush / roller paint mail vans when they got tatty using Masons red coach enamel paint and it was amazing the quality of finish. The old guys would slap it on roll it out and then wait a week before cutting back and polishing. Later on we did spray enamel but the roller finish was always more durable. Looking forward to more pix and tips from you!

As an accomplished paint sprayer I can understand why some might throw up their hands in horror at roller painting. First thing that goes through your head is 'artex'. This paint has been formulated to work well via roller since it doesn't dry instantly like most other types of paint. Its this slight 'flow' that allows it to flatten out to a fairly smooth finish.

Having worked on V-dubs since the late 70s and painted more bugs than I can remember, the vans tend to take far more abuse and coupled with the damned size of the things, spraying is a nightmare on a DIY basis. Besides, it isn't long before some inconsiderate car owner who can't even see over their steering wheel in an Asda car park will run a nice crease down the side of your once pristine panels. Thats just the way it is.

I figure that this method means that slight damage can be easily rectified by a quick roll over and flat-out to put right scratches etc. Its great for rust protection, its a hard paint and can be mixed to order I gather.

Anyway, first thing Saturday I'll start snapping and try and talk my way through the process on here as best I can. By the looks of it I may have to remove middle side windows to treat some rot but I sorted most of the body dents and rust spots some months back so it only needs a rough-up to get the paint to adhere.

If you read back in this thread you'll see links to pages of reference material on how the paint is used.

I just hope that 'council blue' will look ok all over

Funny thing is, on my final trip to the good old £1 shop today (well, Malmart as it is here on Ball Hill), I got a text from Rob saying "Hey read on 80/90 you're rollering your van tomorrow" and then blow me, in Malmart, bumped into a guy round the corner with a wedge who rollered his!

Small world.....

Wow - I LOVE this paint!!!

It took me around 8 minutes to do one whole side and not a bit of mess, barely any masking required, and I tell you what, the first coat ism't bad.

I know it has to be flatted between coats but providing you thin it (around 20% white spirit) you can get a fairly glossy surface even as it is.

I did take pics today (and will tomorrow) but I'm not near my own PC so can't upload at the moment. Good time to do this though - no bugs about.

By my calculation, 2.5litres should do an entire van - barely used any so far.
