Some time ago the front diff lock on Jens van stopped working. As far as Jen knows no one had a look until today. While I was under the van fettling with the speedo I discovered why the locker has failed.

Does anyone remember taking this off and why?

You may also notice the rubber boot has failed, is this the cheap same as the 2WD one or the expensive and rare one?

From my latest adventure into Syncro mechanics.....

I would say that is the less expensive item (refering to the boot) the expensive and hard to find CVJ and boot is the outer one.

I picked up a replacement boot for my inner CVJ from GSF the other day, cost a princely sum of £7 something.

WELL worth replacing too, if my CVJ's are anything to go by. Do it now before you end up regretting it.

Heh, that explains that. Field repair at the request of Matt, the front one is now on the back, looks like I'll have to locate the spares bag.

Good stuff on the boot, will source a replacement soon as.

Don't know if my speedo fetling has done anything as the last bolt is being a pig and is currently soaking and we can't drive the van

afaik, it was in the glove box, pretty sure it was
FUBARED, hence the swap, but it was 2005...
I'm sure Sam got them working with a replacement after that tho...

The whole front inner jpoint can eb replaced by the std. T25 rear, slightly different boot arrangement but it works. About £20 with a discount... the front inner does have a different part no. to the rear, as I say, the boot at elats is diff. but nobody appears to ahve had a problem with the GKN or Lobro rears fitted to front inner...

Matt I supplied with a replacement actuator when swapping the sliding door on the nearsid at Runcorn a couple of years ago, but I hadn't got a bracket, but it looks like the bracket wasn't needed. Get Simon to order four M4 bolts for the bracket as the rear locker vacuum unit (At Rebuilders) was held on with some bent bits of metal.

OMG. I didn't think that through really did I. The rear vacuum unit is at yours then with the not very well gearbox. I wonder if the mangled pipe we couldn't ident at the rear is anything to do with that?

So we need to track down the spare, find out if the replacement box is going to come with or without one, order the bolts and check out the state of the pipe work at the back. Gah.

Oh, why doesn't the speedo work? I tooke the cable off both ends and checked it was free running and turns at the bottom translated to turns at the top but it stll wont go round when driven.

Is there a known failure of the speedo mech in the diff does anyone know?

Yes there is Euan.

The plastic gear wheel driven by the worm drive shears its teeth.. the part varies depending upon the diff ratio, think the colour give a clue, 5.43 ones are usually red it seems , Aidan will know, thank goodness

The roll-pin is 5mm
The trick is to get the roll-pin out without mullering the diff casing lug and making it doubly hard. First cleean the whole area up so you can see it well (the end of the roll-pin) which will be some way into the lug. Then some WD40 just for fun, help clear some of the corrosion away, maybe pen oil might help the final push, but its really all down to dead accuracy with the right drift and good solid blow with a club hammer... you may be lucky, or as with some even on the bench, can be a swine.
Look here for the right size of drift, don't mess about with anything else, I've seen the odd diff with the lug totally mullered and the pin still in there... so follow the guide below from the ATNAC* club memoirs...

In case it is totally illegal I'd just like to say that my dash has been intermittent rather than completely ineffectual until the last few miles before this last weekend, honest Guv......

heheheheh, had the same convo with Andy Scoobydrew
Mines only 2wd,...........
the present speedo is 33% wrong
and the milometer is a wee bit erattic
now the cable has snapped
so...replacement speedo cable £21

2nd user speedo, say £20 ( ?????) + postage

so £45 + messing about + gsf is a 16 mile round trip

or £110 for a aldi gps....

If its any use....

I spoke to CJ recently about Syncro Speedo drive gears.
He has loads of them sat on a shelf.

I found this out because my speedo stopped working, still havnt fixed it yet, but will be getting a drive gear from CJ i think, rather than the entire assembly from VW at over a £100.
