Fitting new gas struts on a leisuredrive pop top!!!

Post by Dylan »

Or Not!!!!!!
Bought new struts as mine don't work at all, roof currently held up with a metal bar!! but they are too long??? can't find any anywhere else was told these would be ok! bought from Individual Interiors.
What would anyone suggest, drilling new holes and fitting new brackets, which isn't gonna be easy or manage with the pole????
Or any other suggestion please

Gas struts.

Post by Rusty »

Hello,

I recently had the same snag! They may seem too big because they are at their full extension. I managed to fit them but it took a fair few attempts!!

I found that disconnecting the old struts will give you a little extra movement with your roof. It'll help if you can have someone inside holding the roof up with the pole.

Before you fit the new struts, give the chrome section a good old wash with WD40 and then compress them in and out for about 5 minutes.
Once they've eased a little bit, attach them, roof side first.

Thats the easy bit. To fit the lower end of the strut, I sat the eye end in an open ended spanner and levered the spanner over the handle of a hammer (like a see saw) to overcome the extension of the strut.

I can email you a photo of this last bit if you like. I'm very new to this, so there may be a really simple way of doing it, but I hope this helps.
Also, be careful not to overtighten the nuts, I did this and sheared one of the plastic eye ends... D'oh!!!!

Good luck,

Michael!

have you checked that they are the same length and your old ones should have a data plate giving the pressure if everything is the same then you may need to compress them to fit.If all else fails ring me and I will try and advise.

make sure they are the right ones. They sent me the wrong ones and so far are taking a long time to replace them...

Cheers for starting this one Dylan - it's been something that's bugging me for days.

I've just fitted a roof rack to my pop-top, and the extra weight has overpowered the gas-struts, causing the roof to fall back down -- hence using a plank of wood to hold it up.

Can anyone tell me if you replace the existing struts with extra strong struts of the same size?

Did you get yours from Individual Interiors?

Mine are too long, when i took the old ones off even at full extension the new ones are longer!!
Haven't touched the job since!
When we fitted a bike rack on the tailgate, the tail gate struts gave up, fitted news ones easy as anything, tail gate now stays up (bought those from JK)

I would say the gas struts were on their way out anyway, this happened to my tail gate, you need new ones or carry on with the plank!!
