Thermostat Housing Part Number

Can anyone tell me the VW part number(s) for an early 1986 1.9DG Thermostat Housing (top and bottom and any gaskets).

Unfortunately the chap at my local VW parts department is a little careless when determining part numbers and I would really like to be able to go to him with the definitive numbers.

I went to the VW garage for one of these some years ago and remember that the price was very high - over £100!

I ended drilling out the bolt that had sheared, but if that is not possible in your case I would try one of the people who sell second hand parts.

Sorry don't know the part number.

No, just the one van. I don't think the mayonaisey oil and the thermostat problem are connected.

The engine arrived with me without a 'stat. When I tried to take the cover off I found that it had a knacked bolt. Or more precisely, one of the nuts in the inside of the bottom part of the 'stat cover was stuck on the bolt. Consequently it came out with the bolt when the top cover was removed.

Now the 2 parts of the housing don't make a complete seal. I've tried using an instant gasket type thingy but that doesn't work. And I think that, as well as weeping from the housing very slightly, that it might be drawing in air (I've bled and bled and bled and more air keeps appearing). So, new 'stat housing required.

, if you do have a cylinder gasket problem , having air in the coolant system isnt going to help

at least the part numbers ad up, cd only cost £12 and covers all vag vehicles.

year is 1986 at the top left, whats the difference?

ahhh, I read the first post as early DG (not early 1986 DG).
The DG engine (as u prob know) changed in 85/86. The early DGs have the thermo housing (in two parts) mounted on nearside of waterpump housing, with access to the thermo from underneath. The layout of hoses is also different. Water pumps are, needless to say, different too!

what program were you using hacksawbob, looked a bit better than the etos one I have, was it a lot more than £12.00?

I was just removing the thermostat housing and when I took off a fabric coated pipe, which leads from the bleed screw at the top to the white tube that runs around the top of the engine bay, I found that it was completely bunged up with what looked like a dark brown clay. This was totally solid and filled the pipe completely.

What the blithering heck is that brown clay sht doing there?
