Engine in its final death throes?

Post by DapperDavies »

Just done the daily checks (1.9DG) and find the coolant level has dropped and the oil level has risen.

Should I start digging the grave?

Well, depends on whats actually wrong with it...
But.. it would be very very unusual for water to get into the crank case, they are not like a "normal" engine...

when you say you have more oil... is it thinner? has it water sat on top? was yr van flat when checking levels?

only thing near i can think of (bearing in mind i'm more Aircooled) would be dodgy fuel pump that would cause the oil level to rise (sniff oil for petrol smell) and that the coolant loss would be a seperate issue

sorry if that's no use at all :)

It doesn't smell of petrol and the top of the oil filler has a definate mayonaiseyness about it.
Also the oil breather pipe is smokey and appears to be spitting water.

drain the oil ,it will be the only way, let the drained oil stand over night ,if there any water in it ,the oil will sit on top of the water ( pour it into a couple of clear bottles )

as for how its got there ?
one the head/s are shot (not good)
two the bottom sleeve gasket has failed , allowing coolant to bypass it ( not to bad )
its an engine out jobbie
wot age is the engine ?

Thank you Mr Onion, or should I call you T'?
I'll drain it tomorrow and see if it seperates.
As far as I know its the original engine (1986) and its done 79k (or I suppose it could be 179k, or 279k).

its a late one hopefully then so shouldnt suffer the snapping head bolts of the earlier ones , thats if its the original one , also look at the engine number and let us know what you find at the end of it * or a vag sign are alway good ... before the oil/coolant problem was she a good un ? pulled well ?
