According to Herr. Volkswagen, yes.

Morris's SAE30 is ideal.

I use turbo diesel 5W-40 oil in my 2ltr Aircooled.
The local air cooled specialist who does the jobs on my van, uses it on his van and swears by it.
He uses it in all his air cooled vehicles.

if volky reccommend it my van is having it. the oil we have is very high quality and 15w/40 is quite a lot thicker when cold so will take more effort to get round the heads etc.
i'll change it if i ever get a weekend off work.
cheers

Castrol GTX for my 2ltr A/C....because she's worth it....and the van's only used in the 'Hot' months in Provence.
I'm contemplating using that 'Magnatec' oil, see if it stops the chatter from the tappetts after the van has been standing for days.

Mmmm.. In very simple terms...
30 weight is 30 at 100 degrees and a lot thicker at lower temps..
15w40 is 40 at 100 degrees offering better oil pressure and effectivly 15 at 0 degrees..
thats the whole point of a multigrade.. the "W" rating in the winter rating..
+ the addatives in a straight 30 weight are much lower offering less film strength and durability..
As I said if you change it more often then fine...
Remember that multigrades have been around since the 70's and the development of them has advanced at a incredible rate driven by engine designs and thus even "ordinary" multigrades have benefitted from the development... straight grades have been forgoten.. unless for specialist applications..
