My speedometer stopped working a few weeks ago- for no apparent reason. I managed to get the "lid or cover" off the two dials and after a lot of failed attempts managed to withdraw the speedo cable from the speedometer itself.
Don't know know what to do next - is it difficult to replace the speedometer itself (presumably you do not have to remove the dash- in addition does anyone know where one get get a new speedometer if it is required ??.
My vehicle is a 1.6tdi- Syncro Joker LHD and the speedo is in kms- if the speedometer is to be replaced I would like to get one in miles- I happen to have a brand new speedo (zero miles) for a VW Passat 1.9 - would this substitute?
Any guidance or responses would be much appreciated.

Ok just read your post properly.
the speedo is removed easily.
Remove the binacle cowl and remove 4 x screws around the edge of the instrument cluster.
Then remove the plugs and speedo cable then the speedo unscrews from the cluster another 4 x screws.
Its probably the worm drive, it happens a lot.
There is a long cog on the speedo, take a look and you will know what I mean.
That moves another cog.
slide it back over and try to glue it if poss or it will come loose again in aprox 400 days.
hope this helps.

You need to check if you are actually getting drive up the cable to the back of the VDO unit. And it is not a snapped inner (happened before to me), else it could be the drive for the speedo from the front diff (different to 2WD models).
If you are getting drive (i.e the inner part of the cable which comes up to the clocks is spinning) then, as mentioned above, you will need to purchase a MPH syncro clock from one of the syncro breakers on here...

speedometer for 1.6 tdi lhd joker westfalia camper
have checked the other end of your speedo cable it's located in the center of the dust cap on the near side wheel, the end of the cable is square it go's throuth a square hole which sometimes becomes worn and will not drive the cable . to replace just remove circlip prise off dust cap ,it is better to get new one as a secondhand one will have started to wear
