help we want to insure our syncro for 4 months travel

HELP HELP stop me going insane with insurance companies!!!

we are taking our syncro on a round europe trip from about end March 2007 to end July 2007 and need to get insurance cover for the vehicle.
Our current insurnace company Carol Nash will only renew end April when we are away and its already taken 3 days to get any sense out of them and we dont want to be let down or be hanging on the phone in the middle of Greece for another 3 days trying to organise it.
So can any one let me know /suggest a reasonably priced insurance company that will give comprehensive cover and also give breakdown cover for the trip. We have a 1986 syncro with westfalia lh drive 2.1litre petrol engine running on LPG

NFU mutual will do unlimited time abroad with their motorhome policies.
I had one when I lived in France for 6 months.

Hi Kevin

We've had similar problems in the past. Most UK insurers will only give three months European cover. One dodge around this used to be to buy two sets of return tickets so that you could "demonstrate" that you were away for less than three months at a time

Columbus used to offer extended vehicle cover I think, but I'm not sure if they still do it.

It's mainly a Saharan bike overland travel forum, but they have a 4wd section and a lot of fairly experienced members

Most of our extended trips have been when we lived in Europe and therefore had unlimited European cover, or we purchased local insurance in Africa / Oz (can't quite recall the details now).

Alternatively try Pladdys Mansfield Rowe (Sue Leonard) http://www.insure-pmr.co.uk/

They do very competitive guaranteed value VW polcies with European breakdowncover. I think standard might be three months but they are worth asking - they have always been very helpful with our van policies

Another route you could take would be to accept third party cover, and extend your home contents cover to include travel equipment. We went this way with a heavily modded TLC, as most of its value was camping equipment and photographic equipment. Admittedly you don't get fully comp - depends upon your attitude to the real risk of pranging or having the vehicle stolen

Another suggestion would be to purchase a European insurance policy in Europe - some countries don't require you to be resident, or you may be able to insure via an overseas friend. Ask on the overland forum link above for up to date info on this.

Keep at it - there will (should?) be a solution. Loads of Europeans regularly take extended trips through Europe, Asia and Africa.

Its true Eropean insurance covers all over the place for unlimited time.. and normally covers any driver too (subject to any age etc restrictions)

Not sure about the non resident part.. but I had heard of an insurance co that was based in Spain that would insure if you lived anywhere...
getting th ebit of paper is the easy bit though.. making a claim... well..!!!

I wont be home for another week, i could pop into my local ins co and see if they can answer..

An alternative to try would be Steve at Glynwoods - he has to be the soundest insurance guy I think I have ever dealt with. Got agreed value of +£10k and full european cover for circa £200 for the year.

European van policies for up to 12 months to UK residents if over 40
