Engine rattle

Post by slam_dunk »

While waiting and pondering on engine conversion, I need the van to earn me money, so would like to fix the 1.6na diesel lump. I was running fine, but recently developed a mettle rattling noise somewhere near the head/cam from the sounds of it - but only in a certain rev band (about 1500 - 200rpm) Any ideas on possible cause and fixes???

Check the various covers & brackets over the cam belt and the heat shield(s) on the exhaust manifold - i used to get a variety of vibrations/rattles which turned out to be loose fittings.

Done this - all seems ok - I wandered if it might be the cam shaft bearings or even an warn, uneven cam shaft. Do you think it would be obvious? I will take a look anyway, but don't really expect to be able to wobble the cam. Maybe the engine is unbalanced - I have been told this might be the case. I did replace the front transmission mount and redrilled the stock mounting holes to sit the rubbery anti-vibration centre piece (technical speak) in the the middle of the gearbox bracket, as it had a tendancy to move to one side under vibration and go mettle to mettle. Maybe I have twisted the whole gearbox/engine. ???
