Alternator servicing, parts, tips etc.

Post by syncroandy »

The 90A alternator in my TD pickup seems a bit noisy, and when I checked there is some play in the shaft. Seems like some fresh bearings are needed

Is this a DIY job or are there hidden gotchas I should avoid ? From VW, the two bearings are about 8 and 10 quid. Is there a better place to buy parts for these Bosch alternators ?

Don't be afraid to have a go at splitting this item, biggest problem may be getting the front pully off and back on again.

Just give the thing a good whack with a copper hammer so you don't damage any shafts, when it comes to spliting the cases,,,

Alternative bearing supplier other than OEM are listed below ,they will need bearing sizes/code numbers to supply the right ones.
