spark plug popped out!

Post by vanjam »

can anyone in shropshire / west midlands area lend / hire me a suitable kit to rethread a spark plug hole?!!!! It's for my brother in law's y reg 1.9l air cooled which quite literally blew its no 2 plug into my face the other day.

The cheapest helicoil type kit I can find is £50+ and local garage quotes are around £70. Any kind offers please

Cheers

spark plug popped out!

I would not go for the Helicoil.. Used them a couple of times and they always failed after some time.
The one I eventually found that worked was the type that you had to remove the head and fit a kind of top hat insert. No way can these pop out.
I cant remember the name of the Kit but I still have the tools Etc. but no inserts left.
I know this is not much use to you, but I am just passing on my recommendations
Health has now stopped me camping Etc.

Is it completely stripped, or is there still enough material to re-cut the thread (with grease on the tap). 14/18mm spark plug thread taps are quite common.
Torque up gently with a new plug and you might get away with it?

My 1982 1.9 Aircooled has just suffered the same fate, I have been told you cant get helicoil kits anymore. Are Keenserts any good? When you take the head off I have been told that the manifold bolts have a habit of snapping off, anyone else had this problem?

This is helicoil website:

It's the main through studs that might break I think.

If not too bad, then you might try a sparkplug tap (with grease on it), then a strong vacuum over the plug hole. Thread taps (14mm one end, 18mm the other) are commonly available. Tighten properly a new plug to the correct torque. Give it a whirl.

Thanks all, managed to borrow a tap kit which included one solid insert which seems to have done the trick. First time I've worked on an Aircooled, is the tinware a pain or what?
