petrol syphoning

while i'm on here, is there an easy way to prime my carbs before i turn the engine over?
the carbs have been off, and the pump and lines are empty, there's about a fivers worth in the tank, and i dont think my battery will turn it over too long before tireing.
i've taken the fuel line off the pump and sucked some fuel out only to hear it run back up the fuel line when i remove it from my mouth...

Don't know about priming the float chambers or pump, but with the air filer off, I often pour a capful down the choke and that usually at least gets it started and running for a few seconds at a time

Suck it with the line connected to the pump as it won't let the fuel run back,as the fuel pump diaphragm will create a vacuum and not allow the fuel to return to the tank. Unless it's goosed of course.So basically just suck the fuel through the fuel pump, not before it.

I usually do the same as Harry, but when you do it, make sure you have a fire extinguisher to hand, just in case there's a problem/backfire or whatever.

thanks for the replies, i'll have a go tomorrow when hopefully it won't be so wet
IF the pump is knackered ( got no history of engine ) should i replace with another of the same ( mare of a job! ) , or should i go with an electric one?
if i do go electric, whats the best type, and what sort of pressure should it be, and with that do i need a regulator?

Oh happy days of my youth, spent in a scrap yard trying the various Anglias, Populars, Prefects moving on to the modern 100/105Es, using the 'down the choke method' sigh! :wink:
