Parked up a while

Hello all -
My van has been parked up on the drive for 3 months or so and like a fool i have not kept up a routine of starting it regulary.
I can fire it up after quite a bit of turning over and then it runs for about 5 minutes (A fair bit of smoke), only to die after what i think is the auto choke cutting out.
I've taken the plugs out and given them a good clean, gave the battery a charge up.
Prior to parking up, i had just replaced, plugs, leads, oil and air filters + oil change.
Any ideas on what else i should do to keep it running and stop the cutting out?
The van is a 1986 1.9 watercooled devon eurovette.
Thanks in advance for any help.
P.S - weve not had any hard frosts or icy weather.

At least it starts, so you're half way there

Did you ever run it through a winter before?

Will it subsequently re-start?

Do you hold it at 1500~2000 rpm to warm it up properly or leave it idling on the choke?

I've let it idle and also held the revs, but it still seems to die off.
Do you think it could be fuel quality?
The van is low on fuel and its a few months old now.
This week i will order up new filters and dizzy bits, then put a bit more fuel in and give it another go.
It is reluctant to re-start but i've only really tried it after a day or Two.
So i need to try that too.
Also it's the first winter weve had it and like idiots left it to sit for a few months.
The vans engine has about 30,000 miles on a V.A.G engine, the previous owners spent near to 3 grand on a new engine.

Put some fresh petrol in. Fuel nowadays doesn`t seem to last very long, especially if the tank is nearly empty.

you'll be needing a new body if you keep doing that many winters......

you should check the fuel filter and carb for water, condensation builds up in the tank if its stood, and ends up water in the fuel

Yup, I really meant, will' it re-start straight away after dieing, if you give it some throttle and turn the key?
