What is a really good brand of anti-freeze (VW) or the ones to avoid?
The vw g12 seems to be good, there are loads of vw's currently driving about without an impeler on the water pump, they are not boiling up, infact they run normal other than a poor heater. There never seems to be any corrosion unless someone has mixed something else with it.
Unipart do one that seems good.
I don't use any other than these and mainly the g12.
Find out what renault peugeot and sh itron use and avoid, they have severe corrosion issues.
Andy, am i to interpret that as VW impellers get corroded off with the wrong anti-freeze, or they just fly off, or aren't on there to start with - a duh! moment is coming I think

A plastic impeler pushed onto a knurled metal shaft, they just fall off., this is a big problem for vw (or their customers), most engines are effected. If the impeler does not come off the impeler starts breaking up.
Which engine is the water wetter for? i don't think its needed in the TD. If its for a subaru i would put a decent coolant in like g12+.
Subaru, its talked about quite a bit in the US so I thought I'd see if it was available over here, and nice to see that its a Redline product (I use their assembly lube and other stuff)..
Maybe a good antifreeze already has something like water wetter in it, but have heard it said you can see a reduction in coolant temp
For what its worth Ive done 30k miles on my ej22 conversion now, trips to Italy and south of france for the last 2 years and its an absoloute pleasure to drive good power even fully loaded with the family good mpg with an average of 26/27 sounds good fits well and appears alot more dependable than the old 1.9 every now and again when the mood takes you you can have the speedo needle off the clock. Well pleased and would recommend.
