So out came the engine..... (two weeks ago)

and the work began!

Good degrease first....

And then I dropped out the gearbox, and cleaned that too!
Looong eves in the garage (midnight/1am - you know what that's like!)

Now, finally I can get on with the rebuild. Heads are away having valves sorted - one was rather worn! (Resulting in half the compression that cylinder should have had!):

Well, will post some more as and when.....

better to get your stuff from vw their prices are cheeper than you would think at least they can soarce for each engine as there are differences as i found out.is your engine a 1.9 or 2.1 on the 2.1 you have a high and a low comp and pistons are different.by the way your engine looks like new how did you get it sooooooo shinnnnnney

Hammy
thanks for the reply. Its a 1.9 - and Im off to local VW main dealer this morning to get the rings :D

As for cleaning it.....
elbow grease! BIG pot!
I used a brush on degreaser with engine in one piece on drive (water soluble and choose the best one for environment )
Brushed on and left for couple hours, then more brushing with stiff brush and toothbrush....
Rinsed with soapy water inc a couple of kettles of HOT water.
Rinsed off finally.

Engine in garage then dismantled bit by bit, cleaning as I did so (before I started I got a HUGE bag of rags from charity shop, £2!)
Once down to bare crank case I again applied degreaser, and some parrafin too. Wiped off with many cloths and a combination of old wood chisel, large and small flat bladed screwdrivers, to get into all to nooks and crannies. The joy of old, greasy engines are that, under all the crud is a shiney one waiting to come out! Its, kinda like a butterfly emerging!!! Haha!

Hours later I used a BRASS rotary wire brush on a mid speed drill, and a Dremmel (small version of a drill) to finish off.

I will need to put on a coat of clear engine lacquer though -
any ideas what brand is best? Brush on preferred.....

Its tokk a fair while but worth it I reckon.
