When you pull the flasher/high beam does the engine only cut out with the headlights on or off (or both). These vans have an extra electrical connection on the indicator stalk that means you can flash the lights even with no key in the ignition. Might have something to do with that. If you can get to the electrical connection on the back of the indicator stalk and disconnect the red or red with yellow stripes wire (careful, it's live) and try again that'll remove this from the list of possible problems.

had a good (ish) look at all the wiring and I can't find any loose or dodgy looking connections.
Looked at the battery terminal connections and they are fine, don't know how to test the ignition switch.
I'm gonna have a look at the live to the starter at the weekend or book it into the auto electricians down the road - problem is though, they never charged me for the last job (their screw up) and I've never been back to them, but the job they did was pants (well half of it was) they fitted a split charge system and it blew.
Anyway what fun

UPDATE:
Cheers folks. I've found the problem, but alas haven't fixed it yet - that will have to wait till tomorrow and if I can get the part.
I pulled the starter motor off to get at the wires onto the solenoid to give them a once over and lo and behold The big fat live that goes to the ignition (did used to goto the battery but that is not in the front anymore) has corroded and was held together by the plastic/rubber sheafing - hence it would cut out intermittently.
Gonna be a fun job feeding it through
Do I need to get as big as thick cable because its not going to the battery anymore???? it was the inch thick stuff.
