large amounts of oil from exhaust
Hi, not had my van for long. its a 81 T25 2lt AC.
Broke down the other week, with the loss of oil and power. the garrage has told me to find a new engine! It starts, runs and sounds fine, (best it ever has). Symtoms;
Oil leaking from whats seems several places around the crank case
Alot, but not masses of smoke
But, masses of oil spray from exhaust (note, must clean neighboughs car)
Great site and forums. learnt lots already, Will be here often!
Cheers

oil spray from exhaust? thats a new one, oil getting past dodgy piston rings and into upper cylinder or past worn valve guides, where normally it would be burnt off in the combution process and come out as blue/black smoke. oil coming out the exhaust may indicate cylinder not firing? doesn't sound healthy though. AC engines are not available from VW anymore so you will be looking at one of the various reconditioners, vege, remtec, etc or an independant rebuilder.

What Bob`s saying is, if the oil is getting into the cylinder bore via the rings, cracked piston or valve oil seals, and then out of the exhaust valve and blowing out the tail pipe, it should be getting burnt during combustion and coming out the back as blue smoke.
If it`s coming out as oil spray, then either,
a) the oil isn`t being burnt, that cylinder isn`t firing, and it can`t be "running fine, better than ever" (unless it was really bad before
)
b)it`s getting into the exhaust system and blowing out the back AFTER combustion, so it narrows it down a bit. Maybe a cracked head is allowing oil into the exhaust manifold?

Keep it real.

But if oil is leaking out of other places, that also indicates allot of crankcase pressure as well. This is usually caused by worn or broken rings.
This all points to a well knackered motor
It might be worth getting a compression test to pinpoint the problem cylinder, then take off the head and have a look, but I would be preparing to get the credit card out and either find a re conditioner with a good reputation or look for a known good used motor if money is tight.

Is the oil spray from the exhaust -you sure it's not black sooty exhaust gases?- there all the time or just on initial start up?
