HELP!...Electrical/Lights

Post by stigman »

Strange one this.......only sidelights work with lightswitch in the dipped position, ignition on. Also not working: wipers, leccy windows, heater fan. Full beam works holding the stalk back but doesn't stay on when its released....when the stalk is held back, everything else then works! Until the high beam stalk is released.

Both stalks have been replaced previously. This was an intermittent fault, but now a permanent one....anyone seen this before? I'm thinking maybe a relay (but which one?!) or the ignition switch is faulty....or maybe the lightswitch...? Who knows?

Its an 89 2.1 Caravelle.

Thanks if you can help!

WEll I would try another stalk before anything else----If you got your stalk recently & it was new--take it back---

I had the same thing, ignition switch has died. They're fairly cheap (£5) from GSF and not much more from VW (GSF don't fit very well) but its the same switch as it fitted to Golf's etc. Before dismantling, get a new (or different) switch and just pull the plug off the back of the ignition switch and plug it into the new one, then you will know for sure without attacking the van first :)

Thanks guys,

Off to GS&F tomorrow for parts then. Hope it doesn't rain or get dark in the meantime!

Sorted!

Thanks Harlequin, was indeed the ignition switch.....a swift prod with a hammer has fixed it for now. Its probably not long for this world though.

Cheers!
