T3 gearbox limits

This is my first post to this forum so I must start by saying what a fantastic forum it is. The depth and breadth of knowledge here is truly amazing.

I have just got my first T3 which has had a 1.9 Golf Turbo deisel fitted and it made me think about the torque / power transmission limits of the standard T3 gearboxes. Mine has a 5 speed box although as I have come to understand that 4 speed boxes are also fitted. Not sure if there are diffent models of the two geardoxes.

Reading this forum I see that people are fitting many different types of engines to T3s but I have not found any info on the design limits of the gearboxes although the drive ratios are posted. Could someone please point me in the right direction if I am being a bit slow or post the maximum power / torque limits of the various 4 & 5 speed boxes.

Hi SS and welcome to the show.

Gearbox is reconned to be good for some quite large power increase, UNLIKE the clutch, which as standard is marginal with a 1.9 TD motor attached to it.
