engine tapping ...

Post by VWlewis »

What engine is fitted? When does the tapping occur, i.e. at 800 rpm turnover? Does the tapping disappear when the engine rpm increases?

If you have only used it for very short trips or just started and moved the vehicle and its a wbx, then it will be a tappet that has leaked down.. take it for a good run..
Also these engines do not like thin oils.. you need to be using a 15w40 or 15w50 or if a little tired, a 20w50 oil..

it needs a good run, maybe as much as ten miles to stop the tappet rattle you are experiencing, thats all.
we all suffer from it if you leave them stood.
the hydrolic tappets need bleeding, and a good long gentle run will sort it.

...of course your rocker assembly could be hanging loose. Not that I'd be stupid enough to do a few hundred miles with my engine in that state.

rocker assembly - a photo

Post by VWlewis »

Here is a page from my workshop manual - I highly recommend getting one before you fiddle with an engine!:D

Image

You can see the rocker assembly holding the valve springs and tappets in place in the top picture. If you remove the covers on the sides of your engine (rocker covers) you can see the "top side" of the engine - rocker shaft, valve stems, springs and tappets (the arm that pivots on the rocker shaft)

I'll stop before I write a manual! You can get manual on FleeBay - search for "VW T25 manual"
