What size AT tyre?

Post by KarlT »

Hi
Just got myself one of these syncro thingy's

Want to put more aggressive tyres on it as the stock (14') ones look abit rubbish- don't you think?

Anyhow got myself some 15' vw passat wheels and was wondering what size tyre I can put on without hitting or rubbing anything?

I was thinking of going for the AT tyre but what vital statistics?

Are remoulds good these days?

Best check that your wheels fit first. I seem to recall that Passat rims have too small centre bore.

ATs will be as much use as a chocolate teapot off road (ask SyncroSam). If you can then stretch to some MTs which will be acceptable on road, and much better off (if you're going to use it off road).

Not sure if Passat wheels will bolt on, have you tried? You may find that the centre hole in the wheel is a little small on the front hubs but I've not tried passat wheels...

The general consensus of the biggest wheel you can safely fit on a Syncro 14 is a 215/75/15. This is slightly bigger no only in tread width but in overall diameter so your cruising speed will be slightly better too.

The most important thing about the tyres on your syncro is that they have the same (or very close) wear on all 4 tyres. If not, the VC will be working overtime and you risk damaging the VC, gearbox, front diff and CV joints. You should rotate the wheels every 5,000 miles or so to keep the wear the same. Make sure you switch wheels over diagonally aswell as front to rear.

Remoulds (Colways) are good cheap tyres for offroading and in the dry but are a little slippy in the wet. If you can find a set, try some BF Goodrich AT's. They come up on Ebay from time to time on Jeep wheels.

As well as the centre bore being too small, Passat wheels have a rather large offset requiring ~10mm spacers, and hence longer studs, and hence a load of hassle.

Merc steelies bolt straight on, but the load-rating is a tad low for a van. Having said that I've used 'em for 18 months with no probs yet. SyncroNutz sell the ultimate 15 steely wich has a full load rating.
