Steering wheel

Post by dansto »

Might seem like a daft question, but how do I get the steering wheel off? It's not on straight and its relly bugging me now ;)

I presume you pull the horn button out and find a big nut that you need to undo then yank the thing off?
Before I start trying to prise the horn off with a screwdriver I though I'd better ask!

As Steff says except undoe the nut but only remove it after you have loosened the wheel.

Or take the nut right off and test your reaction time when you yank it!!

Undo the nut with the steering lock on. (keys out)

Replace the keys, undo the steering lock and then place a hand at 12 o'clock and one at 6 o'clock.

Rock the wheel between the two and it should work its way off gently, avoiding A&E

'cos its on nearly upside down :) had a look at the track rods/arm and nothing looks bent. The tracking seems fine, good in fact, even though its been bloody windy today. No sign of tyres scrubbing out either.

The column shroud was under the drivers seat when I bought it so I may have had a replacement column at some point.

when you said it wasnt on straight.i thought you meant its on crooked.witch means its not sat on the splines correctly...i think you mean when the front wheels are straight the steering wheel is looking like you have full lock on...

forgive my lack of clarity ;)

I just read back my post and wanted to say that I wasn't questioning your judgement! Although I have always worked on my own vehichles and come from a family of grease monkeys, I've never owned or worked on a T3 before. I really don't have the first clue about the abundant peculiarities I'm finding out about in the last couple fo days! If you were to tell me that the wheels fall off at the stroke of midnight on days strting with 'T' I would not have any reason to doubt you :D

It could have been put on that way, because it fitted the last drivers posture better. I had mine fitted upside down when I got it.

Take your socket with you when you test it, you'll be able to alter it once you van is pulled up in a straight line....nothing more annoying than being a spline out.
