Help! Something my gearbox is broken! (S.Wales/Manchester)

Post by Tim Powell-Jones »

Hi

I've got an X reg 1.9 litre Aircooled camper van which broke down near Swansea Christmas time.

I really need some help, the only garage in the village admit to knowing nothing about these vans and have told me I need a new gearbox but can't fit it and don't know where to get one. There's no chance of me being able to do the repairs but I have a bit of money with which to get the parts and pay someone to fit it (again, the existing gearbox may be saveable).

Can someone recommend a course of action? I can either get it towed to somewhere near Swansea or possibly get the AA to tow it to my house in Manchester. Volkswagen specialist garage recommendations? If anyone here is in either of those 2 areas and wants to make some money?

If more details are needed I can post them here, otherwise please get in touch by replying here or e-mailing tim_pjones@hotmail.com. I love this van, it's my band's tourbus and my holiday machine but I'm totally stumped as to what to do.

Kingsway Motors sounds like they could do the trick. Close to where the van is anyway...

I can shift gears Ok and they all seem to work but there is a scraping noise intermittently followed by big jars and rattles, almost as if a bit of metal has come loose and fallen into the gear box, it's a proper violent thing that makes the whole vehicle jolt. I don't know enough about vans or gears to be able to give any more precise analysis.

I'll try and get in touch with Kingsway tomorrow and see what they say.

Cheers

--Its possible yer clutch has broken up---but if it is found yer gearbox has gone I can recommend Shiplake motors tel 01189403125 they are at Henly-on-thames--you can get a local garage to take yer box out & either take it there for exchange or use a carrier--
Billy...Defected to white box but still lurking.
