getting new number plates made
Can anyone please tell me how to go about this?
Can it be done while I wait? Or at least same day, if I ring ahead?
Rough idea of cost?
As always, it's a bit tricky, what with living up here in the hills. I'm going to be going through Ross-on-Wye to Bristol tomorrow, if anyone knows a specific place to go to?
(I've got the V948 certificate, will take ID)

Yeah, they usually do them while you wait, but you need I.D. and the log book, unless you've re-registered it and got the letter from the DVLA with the new reg on. Still need I.D. though. Well, you do in Manchester anyway. I'm told it's the new rules to stop people ringing cars, using stolen motors for bank jobs etc. Apparently the mot people, VOSA I think, were going to make it a fail if the number plate didn't have the postcode of the shop that made it, but that's not going to happen. Yet. So I'm told anyway, by my local MOT station. Anyway, try the link below-

Cheers, it's a re-register (non-VW), authorisation certificate says I'll need proof of ID. I reckon I'll do the Halfords thing. Thought! Will it have Halfords written on it??? If I pay extra, maybe they'll leave it off. Either way, needs to be done sharpish. Am driving with false number plates at the mo

Had mine done at Halfrauds 'cause although they do put Halfords on the plate it is done in a sort of etching so that it does not stand out like if it was in black.
They make them while you wait but, only if you want standard or 3D lettering. If you want borders or other types of lettering then you have to order and collect at a later date.
Plate makers have to put at least their postcode on the plate by law so the plates can be traced. You will need your new reg document and ID.

Just had a thought, maybe they'll put Halfrauds on the plates for me? Or Halfwits?
(We'll miss 'em though, when they've been subsumed into Tesco's or Walmart...)

Its the law in England
They have to put the name of the supplier and the postcode on the plates its the new law. You can get your plates from Scotland as the law doesn't apply here and you don't need any id to get them. Lots of folks advertising on E bay. Typical price is £15 a pair

Job done, thanks all!
Took the Halforfeckssake! route. £30 including sticky things. Walk in, walk out. Service was okay-ish: friendly, but... I hopped out to check what fittings I needed, returned to discover assistant was now assisting some oik who was availing himself of one of Halford's super range of radio-controlled model cars.
Had to wait while they, with the store manager, worked out how to get it back into its packaging.
Number plates, from a toy shop.
Then, got home, stripped off the old plates. Noticed on sticky thing instructions that they can't be fitted less than 10 degrees C. Already a lot colder than that! And it's now dark!
Oh pants!
That took care of the sticky things. The number plates went on the radiator indoors. Asked neighbour to borrow hair dryer. He didn't have one of those, but did have a fan heater.
So, operating by streetlight, scraped off the gack, prepared the job, cooked one end of the car, retrieved well-warmed sticky things, retrieved plates, stuck all together, repeated on end two. Now, fingers crossed they don't fall off...
PS, if you're doing the same job, learn by my mistakes and check whether the number plate hangs off the edge of the mounting area before you attach your sticky things.
