1.9 Wont tick over and runs poorley

Post by myloser69 »

My 1.9 has been running like new since I bought it a couple of months ago. However, I was working away for three weeks and had not run it at all in that time. When I came to start it the battery wasnearly flat so I tried jumping it off my car but it wouldnt start. There is a fuel filter in the engine bay and I checked it and there was no fuel in it. I sucked the inlet pipe into the fuel pump and eventually got a mouth full of petrol. There is fuel now being pumped through the fuel pump but it still wouldnt start. Took the plugs out and cleaned them becuase they were blackened. Put them back in and it started but it wont tick over. got it to operating temp on my drive then took it around the block but it is running poorly and still wont tick over. Anyone got any ideas before I star buying new pugs, Leads Fuel Pump ETC.......
HELP

give it a good thrashing! it'll like it. mine used to be a daily driver, now i only drive it every couple of weeks! so i give it some grief, and after about 10mins and at temp it's fine again!

check the vac pipes , airbox to carb to dizzy , also take the filter out of the engine bay ( shouldnt be there) check that the one ( if there is one) just after the petrol tank is good

Well, Bought a new dizzy this morning shop didnt have rotar or leads !!!!!!! I put the dizzy on cleaned up the rotar best as I could and she started straight away ticked over spot on UNTIL it became warm the it died. Backto the same fault wont tick over and runs like a bag of spanners. So Ive left it to cool down to see if it starts from cold ok This would piont to carb/ choke problem??????????? I couldnt take her for a good thrash because the way she is running I dont think I would make it home
Once again its got too dark to check everthing. Will check vac pipes and the other filter ( if its there ) in the morning. Fingers crossed. Thanks for the advice

I had bad running on a 1.9dg on & off for ages--cured it by taking top of carb of & cleaning out float bowl--it had a lot of sediment in the bottom--the only way out is thru the various carb jets blocking them-then they clear-then block again--

Right here we go...She started up from cold and run spot on up until the choke went off at operating temp. Found a vac pipe from dizzy to carb to be very perrished so replaced it but still no better. However while look underneath for the correct fuel filter I found that where the tail piece bolts onto the main silencer was rotten away and had also come away. Suppose that this wont help but surley not to the extent that it is running at now ???????I think ill leave it until after christmas now and maybe get it to someone local Brickwerks maybe ????????

Glad you got it sorted. By the way, never found a VW that liked holes in its exhaust - they're very fussy about their back pressure.
