Bad vibrations!

Got the van started now but when I drive there is a nasty vibration (2.1 syncro) the diff lock light is on all though I have jacked up the rear and checked that it is not engaged the rear wheel spins independantly. I will remove the vacuum unit tommorrow as well. it feels like clutch although I only have about 5-10Kmile on this clutch. Drive shaft has been disconected and reattatched to do starter motor. one of the bolts is hex rather than tri square shouldn't have thought that would cause a problem though. bolts all on tight and I have rechecked my wheel nuts. Its like the syncro prop shaft vibes when in the wrong gear but lasts longer and more pronounced.

he he, hope your wrong! I am pretty sure that the collar on the actuator rod is not alligned and has no circlip as corrosion has taken its toll so switch is actuating without difflock engaged. Actually come to think of it %100 sure on right way.

vacuum unit removed still vibrating under load, at constant slow speed van will lurch occasionally. clutch?

CV joint (s)..
clutch wouldnt give a lurch/vibration unless its slipping/broken.. and I presume its working!!!

CV joint has come off for access to vacuum but still attatched wheel end just bagged up the end whilst it was off, what should I check for?

Could be any one of the 4 at the rear... if it was still doing it under load with prop off..
Notchyness in the joint when moved by hand.. but ideally you want to remove the drivshafts and clean out the crappy old grease and inspect for pitting, then if ok repack with fresh grease..
Its possible that you could get away with swapping the driveshafts left to right, but this only works if you keep the shaft orientation the same..
ie.. left wheel cv joint goes on the right gearbox output flange and the right wheel cv goes on the left gearbox output flange.

OK Aiden seems to think prop shaft so going for a removal tommorrow. Definately lots of vibration particularly going into third gear. But wouldn't explain the odd power loss and/or gain particularly when coasting, doesn't seem to be under load I can get up a hill in second OK it will power up it but occassionally the engine will hes....itate. not the refined power I have come to expect from the 2.1

Anything transmission that makes a vehicle lurch would be so serious it would be very obvious what it was... surely.

Thus engine... and weather at the moment. Has the sparks department been fettled into tip top shape lately or neglected for a while?
Another day, another month, another year, and freezing conditions with 100% RH... highly likely that electricity is the problem, or lack of it somewhere. With moisture in de works, or cold causing havoc... not icing up back there are you Bob?

he he trust you to raise a smile. is it bad enough that I have lost my rear diff lock I am expected to remove the poor vans manhood to prove a thesis!! dizzy cap and rotor was cleaned last night and wd40'd ummmm what else replace HT leads? coil? anything left? battery is new and the starter fires over like a goodun.

almost all cases of syncro vibrations come down to prop shaft,cj.

How true CJ, prop removed with help from Aiden, vibration has mostly disappeared, 2 wheel drive for winter, great!. Anyway he thinks the rear diff has some movement in it causing the bad vibes. hopefully OK to drive to Southampton tomorrow, fingers crossed!
