i managed to pick this engine up very cheaply, its a 2001 ALH with less than 13K on it. i initialy tried to get the ecu and loom from a pre 99.5 as in i was asvised these dont have an immobilizer with the 80pin ecu. true for the states but not GB?europe, anyway to cut a long story short i got all the relevent wiring ect from a 98 golf and now i'm working on a way to fit it to my syncro DOKA (where theres a will theres a way). fast forward do this conversion in canada they even offer a service of burning out your existing immo if you send in the ecu. im at the stage now that i've rightly or wrongly got this far, and feel that the job is not immposible, just difficult. it looks like fast forward remove the immo from the clocks and strap it together with the key and sensor into the wiring conversion work they offer. i'm more keen to find out what to do, and to make the information available to everyone, after all these old buses arn't worth spending that sort of money on that some of these places are charging for conversion work, and solving the immo problem opens up a whole new ball game of next generation dieseles like the pd engines ect

Hi Doug
I'm bumping along the bottom of the learning curve with regard to installing a 1.9 TDI PD donated by a crash tested Passat 2003, engine code AVB.
This has the immobiliser module in the clock - I think is the Immobiliser III system. I managed to get everything I need except the key.
I've now got a key from VAG which fits the barrel but need to get it coded to the immobiliser which is proving a bit of a problem.
I have got VAG-COM software which I can use to 'adapt' the key if I could get the seven digit SKC (secret key code) from VAG. However it appears that when they adapt keys they do not see the the SKC as its done 'online'
So it appears that when everthing thing else sorted out I will have to trailer the van to the garage for them to 'plug it in' to code the key.
However,I am toying with the idea of wiring up all the necessary components out of the vehicle and take that to VAG to code the key!
Moral of this story - make sure you get the key!

That does sound like alot of hard work for 100bhp, it would be alot easier to put in a AFN and get an extra 10bhp. What gearbox are you going to use?

thanks for the tip, i've been trawling through the posts at freds tdi thingy and have noticed there are a few SKG code readers on the market. none are cheap though take a look at vagdashcom.de i think thats how it was spelt. this program can retrieve the code from the immo.
on the clock front i have discoverd that all that is needed is to wire in the K wire and can bus and give the unit the correct voltage. it may then be stashed away under the glove box along with your new key!
i think it sounds like we are both at a similar stage in our learning curve, it would be good to keep in touch and share information. maybe even produce a nice sticky at the end of it all so others can get the info they need for this in one hit

Hi Doug
Thanks for info - will investigate!
Hi Andy
Its going in my syncro DOKA so will use the AFN box, I intend using the van as a play thing not my 'normal' mode of transport - I've got my T4 syncro panel van for that!
I've also got a AWX engine - 130bhp.

if the wiring loom you have is from a a 1998 i assume it was a mk4 golf if so it will have a 121 pin ecu and the immo 3 system combining clocks keys and ecu which are all matched parts.this type of ecu can have the immobilier removed via the obd2 socket but most chip tunning companys will only do this while chipping but doing this means no keys no clocks no problems hiding bits and extra power and torque in one go try revo & custom code for the immo delete and remap

the audi 80 is a different animal all together up to 94 my it was a none immobilised ecu this is as far as i know is the only europeen tdi to not have a imobiliser factory fitted but it was only fitted to the 1z type engine which is 90hp the ahf engine dougslug has is a 110 bhp so the engine would be losing power from the start by using this ecu setup. the audi80 injection pump has a different plug fitted. the ecu also has a one off 55 pin wiring loom plug only ever fitted to that car and also has a external map sensor etc. so at the very minimum you would need a audi 80 pre94 engine ecu, 55pin 1z tdi engine wiring harness, map sensor & injection pump by doing this the engine would run but be down 20 bhp on correct ahf ecu harder to get spare parts for and more difficult to communicate with if a fault were to develope as code readers find the 2x2 pin early diagnostics of the audi akward due to different baud rates of the early and late dianostics the early ecu is apprently more difficult to reprogam to gain back the lost 20bhp and most of the tuning boxes have the golf style late 8 or 10 pin pump connector if i was doing the swap i would be looking for a pre98 afn engineed passat or the likes off with the 68 pin ecu to remove the loom ecu keys and immo box to do away with the need for clocks or have the correct ahf ecu chipped and the immobiliser deleted at the same time

custom code and revo want between £450-£600 + VAT for the pleasure, a bit steep just to hide the clocks. fast forward does it for $300 can, about £150. but this means a short holliday to B.Colombia for your ecu. looking into a few other possibilities, including doing it myself with an eprom programmer/ KWP 2000. watch this space!

tdi clocks/keys
not cheap but extra power never is! it has gone down in price when i last asked when i was building a 1.8t golf it was £750+vat. try looking on ebay i noticed someone on there was doing the immobiliser delete thing a few months since it might of been £175 but dont quote me on that but it was defo in england

found another option. apparently you can use the J362 immobilizer from a T4 or beetlle cabrio. this immobilizer is a stand alone unit, so you dont have to hide the clocks. you would still need to use the key and sender though. the unit is the sise of a ciggarette box, i also have a t4 so i went to have a look. this means that the whole lot can go into a little waterproof box and sit nicely in the engine compartment. cost new ??? or £50 from a breakers. i have VAG. com software so introducing it to its new friends shouldn't be too much a problem

all 68 pin tdi ecu's 94-98ish had the "standalone immobiliser box" and didnt need clocks to run doesnt matter if it was a t4 golf3 seat or whatever it came from same basic setup this is the setup i would use as i said above to cut down on wiring. i wouldnt think the new shape (european market) beetle would not use the seperate immo box as it is a4 chassis variant (golf4) and as far as i knew all golf4's were immobilser in clock type 121 pin ecu's although this info could be right for the usa as they were behind times on europe with the immobilisers on the early tdi's
