Is it the relay

Post by syncroderby »

I have a 1.6 deisel camper and the problem that has just developed is that the glow plug warning light stays lite when you are trying to pre heat the glow plugs, and it does not start till you have done about 10 pre heats, when it does start the warning light goes out as it should and it starts from warm without any trouble. Is it lickly to be the glow plug relay as the problem seems to have appeared overnight.

if the light is on its means that the engine is cold and power is going to glow plugs and should stay on for about 20-30 secs power remains on the plugs for a further 6-7 secs after the light has gone out. it sounds if one or more glow plugs has died the easiest way is disconnect the busbar and check the continuity of each plug if you don't have a meter rig a 12v bulb up connect one side to battery and touch the other top of glow plugs, light on good light off bad and you can bet that if its a duff'n it will be behind the injector pump hope this has helped

Garage using high voltage jump starters did for 3 glow plugs on my old Pug..

PS. Always check the glowplugs before you put them in... jump leads across them, be careful, glow cherry red in about 5 seconds

Had a complete set off Peugeot garage for a Talbot Express yonks ago and they didn't work - not cheap either !

I have replaced the glow plugs, cleened up the busbar and replaced the relay and it has made no differnce. The large fuse is ok and there is power to the glow plugs but it is still not getting them hot enough to start the engine and the warning light is still staying on.
Has anyone got any other ideas as to what may be causing it.

Are you pulling out the cold start handle under the dash in this horrible weather?

It makes quite a difference, especially when it's, errrr cold and stuff. I killed the first battery in my doka wondering why it wouldn't start (no handbook) before I learned of the cold start handle thingy. You'll find it on the left of the steering column, just below it. It's a non-descript black handle that will be a bit stiff to pull out. Provided it works it advances the timing a bit for cold starting. Pull the handle out and-lLet the glowplugs do their thing for however long they want to and then try starting it.

Bear in mind that from cold, in cold weather the glowplugs may stay on for up to 30secs. It's not a modern TDI engine you know!

Yep know about the cold start lever and have always used it from cold.
I will try leaving the ignition on longer but if it like it was before i changed the plugs and relay it wil stay on permanantly and still will not start

try a bottle of injector cleaner in the tank and see if that makes a difference dirty injectors will make for difficult staritng. assuming all glow plugs are working and staying on for required time.
