erratic idle
ok ! one for you carb experts. Just got my van on the road after a full recon everything. to get it through the mot the mechanic had to set up the carbs and tune the engine. (he did this off his own back to get it through for me) iIn the 2 weeks i've been running it it ace when warmed up but when cold it cuts out at the junctions when i dip the clutch. The idle speed is fine again when warm but it appears that the choke is cutting out too soon. If it is started from cold the engine runs ok till you rev it then it cuts out. Is there something i can twiddle.

Have the carbs ever been refurbished? if not then most likelyits the normal old 2L Aircooled problem of worn carbs.. only real way to make it good is to have them refurb and set up properly on a rolling road..
sounds like the mech may have turned the idle co down to pass emissions, but could be too low.. ask him to tweak it back up a fraction if he can..

No the carbs have never been re furbished. I know the mech had trouble in getting the hydro carbons down for the test and had to "re do" everything and then alter things afterwards to get it to run right. would this be the CO as well? Could I not tweak the mixture screw one way or the other without any equip or is that asking for trouble? By the way it does seem to be using a fair bit of fuel!!! I know these vans are not good but at this rate i would be needing to drag a tanker round!!

Hi dave long time no see, I know Steve at gasure has refurbed these carbs in the past. Need a CO meter and carb balancing to get it to run right , but if its sucking air in through worn parts it'll never be right. You could try spraying carb cleaner around the throttle body to see if it sucks some in and the engine note changes. Do you know what milage your getting roughly?
