Pinto clutch assembly help required

Post by justbuggin »

Hi

I'm new to the forum & I'm in need of some help with an 2.1l Pinto conversion on my '89 panel. Used to have a 2.1 petrol VW lump, then got converted to a Ford 1.8 diesel. I'm now putting in a reconned 2.1 pinto & need some help with which clutch & pressure plate to use (the old one's burnt out & needs replacing. A heavy duty one would be great as the van's going to be hauling a lot of gear).

Advice needed asap please, it's the project for this week!

Cheers

Is it using the Ford flywheel? If so, then I would think a standard 2 litre pressure plate would be fine, they used them in the RS2000. You need to take the thing apart and see what friction plate you`ve got in there, could be Ford, VW or some other device :)
2.1 rebuilt to RS spec should be doing about 125BHP easily with all the good bits on it, RS manifolds, 3 litre Capri carb, 2 1/2 inch straight through `zorst, etc I did one once and put it in a Tranny twin-wheeler with overdrive box and big ratio axle. Was a pig to set off, but it was built to do a run to London and back once a month. Once you got it moving it was very quick  I raced the bomb-disposal team on the M1 one day (they had 3 litre V6 in their Transits), speedo was showing 120  Pinto is still a good solid engine today :) heavy though :(
Keep it real.

The flywheel looks to be a VW one? The pinto one's flat & this one has a raised rim. The pressure plate's by LUK, friction plate stamped F&S, 1861 271 236, & is 200mm diametre.
Ideally I'd like a heavy duty upgrade if poss, as the van's going to be haulling some weight.

You need to be takin` the pressure plate and friction plate to a motor factors and asking them if they can say what it`s off first, could be VW, could be anything (I know, I`ve done one or two weird conversions using plates off other things and machined to fit :)

Once you know what you`ve got, you can start to look at uprated stuff if it still needs it. Are you having clutch slippage trouble at the moment? I think the VW 2.1 injected motor uses a 200mm clutch plate? Have a look at "alternative clutch for AAZ" post, lots of stuff being discussed on there to do with bigger and better clutches.
Keep it real.

Just ordered a new LUK friction plate to replace the old (really worn) one. Hopefully I'll get to start re-assembly next week, so I'll let you know how it all goes.
