2.1 DJ Caravelle... got a few questions

Post by veedweeb »

Right, I've now picked this thing up and I've got a few technical questions...

1. The idle is not terribly smooth, and it "hunts" when ticking over. Is this likely to be the idle stabilisation valve/controller? I read somewhere about cleaning the valve with brake cleaner or similar.

2. When in neutral, and increasing engine RPM by gently pressing the accelerator, the revs increase steadily to about 2,500, then drop by about 500, the carrying on rising again. Any idea what causes that?

3. The temperature gauge hardly moves. The heater gets nice and warm quite quickly, but the gauge moves only a tiny bit. Faulty sender, maybe? Or gauge, or could there be an airlock around the temperature sender?

Once the weather gets a bit better, I'll check for air/vacuum leaks and also check the plugs etc anyway, but it'd be nice to have an idea of what to expect if they all turn out to be OK

Other than these things, I really like it, and it pulls like a train :D

Cheers,

Steve

Yep... Quite often the idle stab valve needs cleaning.. with brake cleaner

Check all connections on the system too...

Dunno about the 500 drop, maybe Aidan will have an idea about that... does it do it from cold and "hot"

Good idea to do a full service still though inc a fuel filter and check what the timing is set too.. 10 deg BTDC is standard, but you MUST run on 98UL with that, or retard to 5 deg BTDC and use 95UL...

Could be the sender or gauge, sender is easy to swap out, but check the wiring as well.. might be woorth doing a little bleed on it too (well you ought to after the temp sender swap)

Thanks for the reply.

I gave the Stab valve a quick squirt with brake cleaner and it has improved things a bit, but it's still not perfect. I didn't really have time to thoroughly clean it though, but it looks like this might be the problem.

I also had a look at the rotor arm/dizzy cap which were badly pitted. That's not gonna be helpigng anything!
