Standard new VW ones locate on the edge of the arch, and then a bracket goes across from the bottom edge of the flap to a hole in the underside seam.

Did you have the old type ones on the rear as well? they bolt on through the bodywork a few inches behind the wheel arch? Mine used to be the same, but i couldn`t find any like that so had to fit the new type VW ones that locate on the arch with a thin metal stabiliser bracket from the bottom coner to the body, fronts and rears look very similar.

Original Westy ones looked different, as they were supposed to protect the Eberspacher on one side and the gas tank on the other. This could be what you`ve got?
