vacuum leak or air problem???

Yeap, its and 84' vanagon. So it has a white wire and possible a brown one. Any idea where in the engine compartment to look and what the sensor looks like?? My bently manual is in the mail but still have not received it yet. Bummer.

There are 2 temp sensors, Sensor 1 (Inlet Air Temp in the AFM unit) and Sensor II (water temp)
Temp Sensor II is usually the one that plays up and is mounted in the thermostat housing (NB. there might also on your model be a temp sender for the temp gauge there too).
TII sensor prob has Br/Blue wire to earth and White back to pin 2 on the Fuel Control Unit.
This runs a high resistance when cold and low resistance when fully hot (2.5Kohms @ 20C; 200 Ohms @100C). If the engine is hot and you measure more than 500 Ohms, then that might be it, or the wiring is open circuit and broken (known this, engine starts but runs rough and very rich, floods and doesn't like restarting - so wiggle those wires to see if it runs better). Just disconnecting plug (spring clip secures) is simulating cold condition!

Somehow think its more than the T II sensor though.

Looks like the mystery may be solved. Cant say for absolutely sure but it seems to be starting fine now.
Looks like CJ's idea was on the right track, I checked all the connections to the temp sensors and found that one of the wires that is connected to the temp sensor on the water pump was loose / disconnected. I had not noticed it before as it has a clip housing
but when I disconnected the clip to check the connection one of the wires was most of the way out. Any way, I put it back in, reconnected and started it up. Let it run for some time (15min) and shut it down. The moment of truth, it restarted just like it should. I then let it cool for 15 or 20 min and tried to restart and it worked great! Ill see how it starts when I get home this afternoon but for the time being looks like you all did it. I cant thank you enough. Hopefully I can be of help to someone else and will continue to be a part of your community if thats OK with everyone. Thanks again.
