ASk the garage for the compression test figures, they can tell you a lot, or get someone local to comp test it, and then do one with a drop of oil down the dodgy cylinder, theer are various ways of determining if its just valves or piston/rings...
when they say cylinder they should mean cylinder, not head.. but they wouldn't know exactly, generally would be rings if they say cylinder.

Yes sure, post them here, but when they do the test, there might be subsequent test to do to determine further what problems are e.g. leakdown test, oil down plug hole etc.
If they know what they're really doing they should be able to tell you fairly well what the problem seems to be... but stay in touch
