Oil leak on top of block?

Can anyone tell me what the black box attached to the back right hand side (on top) of a 1600ct engine is. It is attached by four studs and nuts and appears to have a paper gasket.

The reason i ask is because it seems to be dropping lots of oil all over the right hand side of my engine, and i don't know what the part is, whether it is just a simple gasket change etc.

Couldn't find any details on the Wiki. Any help greatly appreciated.
