1.9D into 1.6D westy

Post by Andyvandy »

Does anyone know how easy it is to change the original 1.6D Engine for a 1.9D.

Where it would be possible to get hold of a decent engine.

And finally Is there anyone in the Sheffield area who would be able to do the work?

My friend wants to buy my old camper but the engine is a little tired and uses some oil so I reckon it could do with a new engine before she buys it.

I am up in North East Scotland and thought it might be easier to get done down where my friend lives in Sheffield.

Thanks in advance.

eyup owduck,i did the very same swap in may,i bought a 1983 1.6d holdsworth villa, engine was in bits in a bread crate in the camper on the floor.i got hold of a 1y non turbo golf engine off e-bay from a good trader for £130+£30 delivery, then you need to swap all the bits over, inlet and exhaust manifolds, sump, oil pump, alternator, crank pulley, possibly water pump, engine mountings, clutch, flywheel, temp senders, all the hoses and unions, and remove and modify the top bit off the lift pump to clear the engine bay lid,im pretty well versed in the ways of the internal combustion engine,so it wasnt too bad for me,but as long as youve got a good selection of tools and access to a mig, engine lift and an engine stand, you shouldnt have any probs,i feel that an engine stand is an absolute must,£30-£40 off e-bay,best thing ive ever bought in my life, then when youve done all that, the gearing may be a problem,as the bhp increase will make the van get up to speed a lot more effortlessly,so ive had to replace the gearbox, plenty of threads on here to give advice on that, again bought a petrol one off ebay for £50 swapped the input shaft and bellhousing, job done,or alternatively fit bigger alleys and tyres,if you fancy a pretty simple but rewarding swap then this is it and marladys camper goes like stink and cruises arouund 60 quite happily and does crap loads to the gallon, got the same engine in marladys golf and the difference in economy is barely noticeable.........best of luck marra................
