Can you help with my exhaust please

Post by campervankatie »

Hi guys, Im a new member and a new vw er, fantastic club!
I have just bought a lovely campervan. Unfortunately I have been told that the exhaust and the bit that it screws onto on the engine is the wrong type for my van. My van is a 1.9 diesel without the turbo. My dad seems to think that the exhaust fitted is off a smaller van (1.7). Should I replace it? I dont want to damage my lovely new van.

Incorrect exhaust manifold is unlikely to do any harm. Could be a 1.9 engine with the turbo removed, so you would need a normally aspirated (non-turbo) manifold to suit. I wouldn`t loose any sleep over it.
Keep it real.

Hi Westey, My Dad has now told me that the vans engine proper name is 1.9 non turbo diesel. He also said that the exhaust and manifold? is off a smaller sized engine, 1.7.
Is this ok?
It seems to rattle like mad.
bye

What rattles? The engine or the exhaust? Diesel engines do have a distinct "knock" when running, if it`s worse than this then you need to investigate the cause of the noise. FULL service should be first on the list. After that if it still does it, it could be a variety of things. Have a good look on Wiki for info. (Wiki at top of page, button with the hammer on it) :)
Keep it real.

These vans came with 1.6 n/a diesel, 1.7 n/a diesel and 1.6TD, so a 1.9 lump isn't stock, so you won't get an exhaust VW designed to go with the engine. Mine has a 1.9TD running with a 1.6TD exhaust and seems fine.

Rattling exhaust etc

Post by campervankatie »

Thanks for all the helpful advice so far. It is my exhaust that vibrates I think becuase it is missing the rubber mount bits. Am i safe taking the van to one of the kwik fit garage type places to get the exhaust looked at? I live in Warwickshire

You would be better trying to get it to a VW specialist who knows what they are looking at. Ask another question like "T25 specialist in Warwickshire" I`m sure someone on here must know someone / be able to help :)

Kwik-fit type places generally arn`t used to seing the older vehicles that demand a bit more knowledge. :?
