diesel cooling system yet again...

Post by soapyjoe »

ok, got a new cap and thermostat ( from VW ! ) checked t/stat, definetely working okay, but when its in the van, it overheats, and only 1 pipe at the back is hot, but when i remove the t/stat, both pipes heat up and no overheating. i know i could just leave it out, but i would rather gget this problem resolved ( i like my heaters to be hot! ) . Any one got any ideas?? im at my wits end with it now. xmas present for the winning answer

Dont take my answer as the problem for your engine only a possibility. You need to check your hose connections or it might be a blockage or some think else in the coolent system. In my case it was the head i had a leak down test that showed it .

had another thought... could the thermostat be in the wrong way ? ive got it with the spring end inside the pump and rounded-ish end sits in the cover with hose attached ? anyone know if thats correct ?

I asked the same question on here some time ago.If you look at some of the manuals and illistrations of the coolent system for the 1.6/td diesel .It is not very clear some show the spring part locating into the plastic manifold that fits on the hose and others will show it located into the pump housing. I made some checks on this when i removed the pump to look at the impellor blades in case they where missing.I found i could not fit the spring part towards the plastic manifold as it did not seat .I am sure the right way is with the longer spring part inside the pump and the round disc towards the plastic manifold that the hose connects to.
