May be a silly question...
This may be a silly question, but does anybody know if a 1.9 DG can be turned into a (sort of) 2.1? The pistons are the same diameter, so the throw on the crank must be different to get the greater capacity. I would be using the 1.9 heads, valves, carburettor, etc. I just wondered, since I'm probably going to have the crank reground, replace the barrels and pistons, bearing shells, etc., whether it would be possible to put the 2.1 stuff in, since there's hardly any difference in price... except I'd have to get a new crank...
Any thoughts?

Yes done lots of times...
But only if a late DG case is used.. ie after 1986
You can in fact use the DG pistons iff you have 3mm (approx) taken off the top..
A new crank was about 300 from VW, but heard they have put them up to 400 now..
Might be better to pick up a tired 2.1 and go from there..
I run a 2.1"DG" in my caravelle and am in the process of biulding up a 2.1 "DG" for my syncro..

The crank and bearings are different in pre 86 cases and very difficult to get the "early" bearings, also the case has to be "clearanced" to take the 2.1 crank (IIRC)
So a late case is always better to start with..
Early cases always suffer with a second problem that can cause issues.. the "head" studs are a lit tighter fit in the threads and if broken are harder to remove..
A "late case can be identified by an extra srengthening web across the alternator mount on the case..
A DF case should be fine if a "late" one...
DG?DJ?MV heads are the same..
DF heads have smaller valves in them so not good for top end power...

Re: Silly Question
Thanks guys! Mine's an 85 though.. so I assume an 'early' case. Looks like I'll need to get a 2.1, I was hoping to use the DG case
I forgot...
How can the heads be the same on a 2.1 when it's injected?
Or is it a cheapo single-point injection system like they put on the old Rover 214's and Sierras?

not sure about old sierra's etc... but have seen the injection equipment on fleabay ... seems to be a manifold arr' with injectors kinda grafted on as they enter the head .....
Stop me if im talking nackers !!
Quite possible to covert to 2.1 + run Pierburg carb,,, dont bother with injection .... will post a shortcut to a post recent .....
I have a case 'DG' [Yorkshire] but only picked up 2 days ago, dont know if early or late ... will find out ....... prob friday...

A 2.1 MV/DJ works fine ont he DG carb etc.. not as fast etc, but works well.. dont know why vw didnt offer the 2.1 in carb form..
The extra torque make for a good drive..
As I said I have a 2.1 "DG"... and have been runing that for over 5 years... done 2 others too... Mocki runs a "DG'd" 2.1DJ...
Heads are the same... fi is all manifold mounted...
1.9GW (fi usa market engine) is an early case too just in case anyone asks..
