Im a bit chuffed today after having just watched a DVD in the van on my new telly. I bought a 15 inch LCD tv from tesco - it had a 12v input so it was mine!
Basically, the tv has a transformer to supply 12v (it has a wierd connector). I snipped off the connector and joined this to a 5 pin relay. One side of the relay was connected to the leisure battery (the side of the switch that is normally on) and the other side to the tv transformer. So, when i do hook up to electrics it will automatically switch to run of the mains.

So now the telly can be kept out the way....
Connected the DVD player to the invertor and hey presto, i can watch DVD'd (and play ps2) when im sat next to a lake "fishing". Sweet.
Rob, LCD TVs are good because they don't take up much room. A Freeview LCD TV may be even better bearing in mind that the analogue signal is being switched off in 2009 in Granadaland.
Goodmans do 15'' Freeview TV for around £245 but you should be able to pick one up cheaper possibly on fleabay. If buying on the bay of fleas
beware a certain seller based in Norwich. The 'brand new boxed TV' I received was either seconds or graded & I had to complain to Ebay in order to get my money back plus a refund of the expensive p&p charges.

It was £169. Twas a bit more than i wanted to pay - but it was there in the flesh so to speak - i could see it took 12v so i bought it.
Ebuyer did do one for £140 but its discontinued and they never got back to me when i asked them if it was 12v - so screw em.
My mother informs me that Asda are doing one for £140 - I would take a look at that if i were you. If it has a 12v input (some just have 240v - mine only has 12v (and uses a transformer like a laptop) - the ones that have both cost a fortune) then that the daddy!
Don't go for a 240v one - even though a £30 inverter will drive it no probs, they are only 85% efficient - so thats less viewing time!
Rob, Just got back from Asda & thought I'd confirm their LCD TV prices.

Checked Ebay for current auctions etc. There is someone selling Goodmans LCD TVs at the following 'buy it now' prices. They are Freeview only (no analogue!!!) & run on 240v or 12v. !5'' @ £179 + £20 P&P. 17'' @ £219 + £22 P&P.
The seller is not the one whom I warned you about. The sale of the 15'' TV expires in about 3 hours but the sale for 17'' TV doesn't expire for several days.
So it's make your mind up time, ROB.

he sells a variety of types. From my research i decided not to go with a freeview one, as when i looked at postcdes of campsites i go to quite a bit, the majority do not have a digital signal. That would mean no tv at all. i decided to go with analogue as its 3 years till switchoff, and the freeview boxes which are now only around 20 quid will probably be even cheaper by then!
So these just plug into your van with tranformer? mine being a westy I have just put euro travel adaptors in the euro socketts so should just plug in and go??????????????

The 12v tellies you can fit a plug and off you go. There are no transformers involved for the van. Mine has got a transformer that converts 240v to 12v - but i don't need that unless i'm hooked up to the mains....
did have a look seems a good deal i think ringo did you attach a cigarette lighter socket thingy to yours? couldnt really get to see the back of it but has yours got 2 inputs ie... 240v and 12v or do you have to cut wire on transformer for 12v? cheers ROB!!

No, its only got one input - 12v. For normal home use, they supply a transformer which converts 240v to 12v.
I had to cut the wire on the 12v side of the transformer. I extended this cable by 4 metres so i could route it nicely (along with a S-Video and audio cables for dvd/ps2) down to the battery.
At the battery end of the cable i connected a relay so i can automatically change between selecting the leisure battery or the transformer (for when i am hooked up to the mains).
As always when connecting appliances to the battery, i fitted and in line fuse (5A i think).
I didn't want a cigerette lighter because i want the tv mounted permanently with the cables out the way....
