Bu... bu...but!

The bottom line is perhaps this: until you've had the compressions checked and they're all goodly (think a round 400psi upwards, min might be 350, stand to be corrected) then you don't really know if its the basic engine or one fo the thingss above. If you do decide to get compressions done, think should be hot first. Unfort, unlike a petrol its not a 5 minute job.

I'm going to try and get it to an independent VW guy in Hereford in the next few days. But it's pouring out smoke when under load, the oil in the sump is squeezing out via various routes because it is under pressure, it wasn't too keen to bump start on a steep hill just now, and at the end of the day it's a 1.6n/a...
I'll let you know what they say; thanks for advice up to now.
