Tailgate Badges .....

Post by Georgedog »

Seems to be different badges [+ tailgates] on early to late models ???
Mine [ its an 84 model ] has no central VW badge on the Tailgate / Back Door, but has a 'Volkswagen' long badge to the left and a 'Transporter' long badge to the right ...
So heres the Q' ..... Are these badges stuck on ??? or on pegs into the body ??? Because i would ideally like to remove em' but dont know if this will leave peg holes ????????????

If im stuck with em, [not wanting holes etc..] could i replace the Transporter with a Camping one ??????????

Tailgate Badges.....

Post by Bowton Lad »

I have a 1984 camper & that has the long thin 'Volkswagen' badge at the bottom left hand corner of the tailgate. The 'Transporter' badge from the opposing corner is missing but there are two holes complete with the remains of the pegs still in them.

I bought a 'Transporter' badge for £3.00 at 'Run To The Hills' but it has no pegs on it. Looks like good old superglue is the answer. Haven't seen any 'Camping' badges for sale, weren't they just fitted to early air cooled campers?

Also wondering why you want to remove the badges in the first place? :)

I removed all the badges and welded up the holes and also removed the external door lock button and plated that then fitted a solenoid to open the boot. It loox kool but sometimes that pesky solenoid jams but thats down to installer error...

My old 1982 Westy has a camping badge on the bottom RHS of the tailgate. Or at least it was until I replaced it as it was a wee bit rotten. Still have to replace the badges which have pegs on and fit into plastic receptacles located in holes in the tailgate.

"Camping" was ONLY fitted to "Devon" conversions age is irrelevant......

Not all badges are pegged, mine are stuck on - dont use superglue tho, it is too brittle and falls off when you shut the tailgate in the winter, as Kev says, get the proper stickies from halfwits or a proper car shop.

My 1981 Westy Joker has a Camping badge on the right hand side of the tailgate, and a Volkswagen badge on the left, and I picked it up personally from Germany. The van, not the badge! There's also a high top round the corner from me with a Camping badge on it too, but I don't know what model it is. Right hand drive, 2 flat tyres. Any ideas? :D

my westfalia must have been a devon in diguise :P

perhaps camping badges were fitted to vans that vw intended to be converted to campers by vw approved converters??
