vin and the difference between a 14 & a 16

Post by chiz »

Are you able to tell the difference between a syncro 14 and a 16 by the vin alone. I have the chance of a 16 syncro and I am just trying to authenticate it. Any comments would be great.

Not just by looking at the VIN, but if you ask VW very very nicely they may be able to check the options list on a given VIN and give you that info.

If the vehicle is a van body, then you can check for the strengthening plates at the foot of the b-pillar and welded-in plates in the rear inner panels. I assume you're aware of all the other differences but for some reason don't trust the seller not to have swapped-on all the other parts ?

not sure about the VIN , what you want is the paper sticker on the A pillar, it has all the options printed on it Aiden may be along soon to tell you what it all means.....

things to look for if you dont already know black wheel arch trims, panel strengthening (could someone get a picture of this?), and higher! oh and 16" wheels

The option code for 16" is M625 but you can't rely on that being printed on the sticker.

Here is a real example from a 16" DOKA now in the UK. M625 isn't listed but M855 is, which is giveaway as would only apply to a 16". I think the trans. codes are also specific so may be a pointer. Aidan will be along shortly to advise..

Model code: 247 3AA: Typ 2 Double Cab Syncro
82KW DJ engine
ALK 5sp. gearbox
Interior trim: AB (Standard Grey cloth)
Paint code: L90D
Options:
CZW:
IAO:
K85:
M552: Additional heater in passenger compartment
M597:
M642:
M855: 205R16 "Semperit" tyres for 16" Syncro
M975: Supplementary heater, Webasto BBw 46.10
M984: Rectangular headlamps
Syncrosport (taking a break as of summer 2024)

M 597 63 Ah battery (with diesel engine series)

M 642 water freeze protection until -35 degrees for cold countrys

M 975 Webasto heater (for diesel DBW64 für petrol BBW46)

CZW, IAO, K85 are Volkswagen internal production code...

You can't read out of the VIN if you have a original 16" or not. The definitely haven't got special ones.

In Germany we can go to our Volkswagen dealer for checking our VIN. They have a central database with all cars since 1975 (maybe ealier).
So you can get the production date, delivery date, aditional equipment ect.
This service is for free, maybe Volkswagen UK can do it too.

I recognize those codes!! :D

Christophe thanks for the extra info.

Funny about the battery - mines a petrol. What would the normal Ah be?

'M 642 water freeze protection until -35 degrees for cold countrys' - the Doka came from Sweden so that makes sense. Do you know what was different?

'M 975 Webasto heater (for diesel DBW64 fAƒÂ¼r petrol BBW46)' - not working at the moment

Hi,

the 63AH battery because of the Webasto heater. I have this package too.

I think the water freeze protection is only a other fluid in the tank, but I'm not sure. I'll ask someone who knows that :)
