She wont start!

Post by pouch »

I have had an intermittant problem for a year or so and finally the van has given up and wont start.

I put the key in the ignition, turn and I can hear a click by the glove box (fuse box area) but nothing happens...?

As I say she has done this on and off for a long while, I have replaced the starter motor and recently changed the battery (New and more grunt). It's only happened a couple of times over the last few months, when it did happen if I kept turning the key she would suddenly start. 99% of the time she starts 1st twist

Any ideas? The battery is in fine health and I have tried another, supposed to be taking the kids away at the weekend!!

Under the van check the wires to the starter motor. the thin one bringing current from the ignition switch corrodes .

While under there use a Voltmeter to check the wire is becoming live when a volanteer turns the ignition switch all the way.

I'll check the wire again, but don't think it is bad, also would that explain why it only happens occasionally and for no particular reason.. I.e. Hot / cold wet / dry

Also if the ignition switch is buggered then there would not be a click from the relay by the fuse box would there??

Any thoughts

depends on if the relay is going on or off... and the igmn switch actually switches other stuff too..

I thought (but could be wrong that the starter was operated directly from the switch not via relay...
Either way.. I would check the ign switch also..

The starter does get its switched supply from the ignition switch direct (unless someone has been playing. It wouldnt be the first time)
The relay you can hear is probably the load reduction relay. It switches off stuff to give the starter motor priority,
A little corrosion / dirt on a contact can lead to alsorts of 'interesting' electrical behavior.

starting issues

Post by Arvi »

try feeding 12v diect to the starter to see if it is working then work your way back

could be you have replaced a duff starter with another duff starter

but i would probaly put it down to a worn ignition switch or poor earthing
Now running and fixing
