Window winder mechanism

Post by Dubstar »

On my 1981 LHD Westy, the drivers side window keeps dropping down. There is a little piece of plastic attached to the winder mechanism that seems to slot into the big hole on the metal piece that is bolted to the metal that is sloted onto the bottom of the glass. Is the piece of plastic replaceable, or do I have to change the whole window winder mechanism? I keep trying to tie the window on with wire, but it only lasts a few weeks then snaps. :D

It is likely that the winder 'tube' has broken free from the stay and therefore the glass wont stay up. I thought the fault was the plastic clip but when I replaced the mech I discovered that it does come out of its slot when the cable guide breaks off.Replacements easy to get.. syncrospares etc around £20.00 on this site. Fit according to Haynes manual andEmail me iof you get stuck.

I'll have a look, but the mechanism does seem to be ok. It was tied up with wire when I got it, but that snapped, so I tied it up, and it's just gone again. It does seem that the plastic piece should have a ridge round it with a groove that sits in the metal below the window, but there is no lip there, just whats left of the groove, hence it won't stay in the oblong hole. A new winder mechanism form JK is £58 I think. Or £68. If I can't replace the clip then I'll have to repair it. I refuse to pay that much when all I need is the clip. I might try VW tomorrow. :D

Plenty of s/h ones at syncrospares. find him in the userlist. Spent ages trying to fix mine and got a replacement in the end . Plastic actually slots across plate that bolts to bottom of window with ligs that attach to guide.

good luck.
