strange alternator belt

Post by domiles1 »

I've got one of the turbodiesel engines with TWO belts. Its the alternator belt that has snapped and I'm wondering how do you fit a new one, because you have to get it past the water pump belt + pulleys and I just cant see how it's done.
Thanks,
Dom.

think you will find the water pump pulley is in 2 halves undo the allen bolts that hold it to water pump spindle and make a note of the number of shims between the 2 halves as they set the tension ie the less between them the tighter the belt will be

Did the job the other week on mine, same set-up. The waterpump pulley wasn`t in 2 halves (well it didn`t come of in 2 anyway), I just undid the 3 allen headed bolts holding it on, dropped it off and removed the belt, then replaced BOTH belts with new ones. It was quite tight to get back on, especially the alternator belt, even with the alty slacked on its pivot, but managed to get it on eventually, then replaced the waterpump drive pulley with belt installed on it, also quite tight.

Once they were on they felt OK on the tension, I think they need to run tight as the power steering is also powered by the belt and it only contacts the power steering pulley by a small radius, so not giving much friction area to do its job.

The pulley is, indeed, in two parts! Thanks for the help.
