Heating

Post by juzzietype25 »

Not sure if this is in the right section but its a technical question of sorts.

Took the van out last night and as it was a very foggy night the van was constantly misting up. The heaters in the van are non existant. I current have a dash mounted fan which is about as much use for keeping the windscreen clear as a wet fish.

Was wondering how the heating works in other peoples vans, is the standard heating any good. Can it be upgraded or are there other dash mounted fan/heaters that people use that do the job.

Look forward to your responses

You didn't mention whether you were air-cooled or wbx, but on my 2.1 wbx engine, the heating is quite powerful. My trouble has been getting it to turn off! There are lots of possible problems with your heating, but if it was working correctly there should be no need for extra dash mounted heaters to keep your windscreen clear.

its Aircooled. The heating panel is there but doesnt seem to do anything- which suggests its not working. No idea how the heating system works in a 25 and havnt had the time to check it out yet.

heating

Post by bennwedge »

i own a 1983 2lt a/c wedge and have just rebuilt the heating system, it works by a heater fan which is attached to your alternator. when the engine is ticking over this fan spins round and directs air through some plastic pipes to the exhaust heat exchangers which warms the air as your exhaust get hot. it then travels through two heater elbow pipes to your heater control units which is just two rubber flaps which either direct the hot air to the air vents or out two outlet holes under the van when you want cold air inside. after the heater control units there is a long big pipe which travels all the way to the front of the van then through your vents.
before i gave my heating system a overhaul the heaters were pretty much non existant. i started by checking the plastic pipes in the engine bay for any cracks or holes. the plastic pipe that comes straight out the heater fan is somtimes broken (as it was on mine) if this has been removed it can be very tricky to get it back in the right place without taking off the right hand side heat exchanger and fitting them both at the same time, hence it gets broken by people trying to force it in to place (mine had a chunk missing ) i managed to pick up a replacment pipe from vanfest this year for a quid. next i checked to two metal pipes that come out from under the engine bay to the heat exchangers (check for a good fit and rust holes) then it came to the heat exchangers which are usually pretty good. if you do however find a problem with them they cost a small fortune to replace. they can be fixed but you would have to break the spot welds and peel back the side of the heat exchangers with a chisel, screwdriver or something of that description, they can then be checked for holes in the exhaust pipework., but that is very rare for that to be a problem (i had to do this on mine because i was trying to trace where the smell of exhuast fumes i had coming out of the vents was coming from).next its the heater elbows, check for rust holes (if you find any, small holes can be fixed easily with some repair paste. if there is major rust or a hole then replace them( i got them from vanfest for 10quid). next its the heater control pods check again for holes rust etc if found , replace (again i picked up two control pods at van fest 2nd hand and in good nick for 10qiud) after that its the plastic pipe work which take the hot air to the vents, look closely at any place where the pipes have been touching the chassis. over the years of constant rubbing they can wear a hole. if you find a hole you could replace, if your a perfectionist or patch up with duck tape.
when i replaced the bits i had with rust holes, i had hot air finally rushing trough my vents. i was quite suprised by the difference it made.although you do have to wait for the heat exchangers to warm up first and when the engine is just ticking over, its not very powerful. but when driving its great. i got it done just in time for winter. On a cold morning with steamed up windows i recommend driving with your head out the window for the first 5 mins, after that your windscreen will be claer enough to see through!. but then thats just one of the reasons why i love my type 25.

whoops. i forgot the heater cables, check to see if they have broken. you will be able to see them through the rear wheel arches with a torch they might also need ajustment , just to make sure they are closing/opening the heater control pods rubber flaps fully.

Cheers Ben- will keep this and have a look. Has a quick scan under my van last night and noticed the pipes running from the heat exchangers are misisng so will need to fit those (hence the no heating in van). Will check out the rest if that doesnt work.

well as it was my first post on this site i thought id better make it a good one!
juzzietype25: if you mean the pipes coming out from under the engine bay then i think you will have to get them secondhand as i havent seen them for sale new, try volksheaven. if you mean the heater elbows that go to the heater control pods then you can get them new from just kampers. im guessing if they are missing then your control pods are missing as well. these can be bought from just kampers ( J10110 control pod , J10111 control pod , J10310 heater elbow offside, i cant find heater elbow nearside on there site, it has a different fitting bracket than the offside you will have to email them to see if they have it. please note that these are for a/c t25 2lt 1979-1983) make sure You check the condition of your cables before ordering because they might need replacing as well and it can be annoying to have to wait a couple more days before you can finnish the job. total cost about 130.00GBP.
the reverend pimp daddy: i have not seen these pipes on the market so i think you will have to get them secondhand, try volksheaven. i can email you pics of them so you know what to get if you like but only if you have a 2lt a/c.
